· Scope and Content	The Administration: Legal series contains 13 files and covers the years 1955-1964. Eleven files contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, copies and translations of laws, press clippings, and other documents kept by the office of the general counsel of JDC. The vast majority of this material relates to restitution, covering topics including negotiations between Jewish organizations and Austria, negotiations between the Allied powers and Austria, negotiations between West Germany and Austria, actual Austrian restitution laws, the implementation of the laws, and the membership of committees of restitution organizations created by the laws. The negotiations and laws dealt with matters including compensation and pension benefits for victims of Nazism from Austria who resided elsewhere and compensation for losses of property and income of individuals. The bulk of the material is correspondence with international and Austrian Jewish organizations regarding these restitution matters and attempts to develop and coordinate negotiation strategies. The earliest of these files also have significant amount of material regarding articles of the Austrian State Treaty and the status of refugees in Austria. Other legal matters relating to Austria are also covered by small amounts of material in these files. One file concerns a legal case and is restricted. Please see our access and restrictions policy.
