Description | Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated by the British in April 1945. One of the first acts survivors took was to erect a memorial: "In memoriam to the 30,000 Jewish victims of war and starvation who fell during the regime of the German tyrants and the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen." Joseph Rosensaft, chairman of the camp’s Central Jewish Committee of Liberated Jews, later noted that JDC’s representatives were the first to visit from the outside world, and that its staff brought survivors "warmth and encouragement from America." | |||
