Description | As the IRO placed caps on the number of refugees accepted into Italian camps, JDC provided shelter, provisions, schools and medical care for those beyond the quota. At the Chiari camp in Milan, established for unregistered Jewish infiltrees, 10,000 arrived in the first half of 1947. Although the movement of hopefuls boarding ships for Palestine led to a relatively fast turnover of residents, more kept coming. In 1948, Chiari's kitchen turned out 1600 meals, three times a day. | |||
