Description | Some of the fifty German Jewish children in the special train car provided by the US Army that will take them out of Berlin to Switzerland for a three month vacation under JDC sponsorship. They were accompanied by 3 American escorts, one a JDC Berlin nurse. Mr Henry L. Levy, Director of the JDC Berlin Office was the driving force behind this new and most important child care project which aims at both physical and mental rehabilitation. The plan started to take shape in November, 1946. The children arrived in Basle, Switzerland on May 12th and were met by representatives of the Zurich Gemeinde with whom all arrangements had been made. Each child was placed with a Jewish family in Switzerland. The children are a remnant of the 40,000 residents of Berlin before the war, approximately 600 remain. | |||
